The beginning skill books are designed to help beginning band students get started on their instruments during the first 2-6 weeks of school. Pictures, written instructions, video support, and family oriented assessments help students learn all 10 skills.
For the past 7 years, we have been using and developing these books with our own beginning band students to help them correctly learn the basics of their instruments during the first 6 weeks of school. Using clear pictures, text, and videos (embedded with QR codes), all students have the support they need when starting their instrument. Upon completion of all 10 skills, they are ready to start any method book or songs that you enjoy! Our goal is to share this resource to "aide" music teachers in their quest to help all students learn and enjoy their instruments during a typical year or even distance learning during a pandemic.

Keith Hunter is currently a music teacher in the Palo Alto Unified School District where he teaches 5th grade instrumental music at all 12 elementary schools. Mr. Hunter received his BM degrees in music education and trombone performance from the San Jose State University School of Music and Dance. In 2016, Keith completed his Masters of Music degree in conducting at the American Band College.
During his time in Palo Alto, Keith has worked on creating all of their 5th grade band teaching materials that they use each year. He values creating custom resources such as the beginning skills, a method book, and other support materials to better reach all of our students.
Before starting his teaching career, Keith completed his California music credential at San Jose State University and student taught at Homestead High School in Cupertino, California. While at San Jose State University, he privately studied conducting with Dr. Edward C. Harris, trombone with Thomas D. Hornig, trumpet with Dr. Kathryn Adduci, and was the founder and director of the nationally recognized SJSU Music Education Workshop Ensemble. During most summers from 2004 thru 2012, Keith spent his time marching with the Cavaliers and teaching the Santa Clara Vanguard Cadets. He has performed as a featured soloist and performer on trombone, euphonium, and trumpet throughout the bay area.
Outside of teaching and performing, Keith enjoys spending time with his family (pictured below), road biking, playing games, working on house projects, and cheering on the San Jose Sharks!
