The Book & Our Story

The beginning skill books are designed to help beginning band students get started on their instruments during the first 2-6 weeks of school. Pictures, written instructions, video support, and family oriented assessments help students learn all 10 skills. These books work well wether you are in-person, flipped classroom, and distance/online learning new instruments.

For the past 8 years, we have been using and developing these books with our own beginning band students to help them correctly learn the basics of their instruments during the first 6 weeks of school. Using clear pictures, text, and videos (embedded with QR codes), all students have the support they need when starting their instrument. Upon completion of all 10 skills, they are ready to start any method book and enjoy making music with their friends! Our goal is to share this resource to "aide" music teachers in their quest to help all students learn and enjoy their instruments during a typical year or even distance learning during this pandemic.

Features & Description of the Skill Books

Here are the features and reasons why we believe our skills book is unique, helpful for students and teachers, and why we use this to start beginning band students each year.
  1. Emphasizes the basic instrumental skills that music educators value and generic method book leave out.
  2. Compatible with any teaching style or method book. Works well in a traditional classroom setting, flipped classroom model, or even during a pandemic where you may be distance learning online.
  3. Scaffolds the basics in an order that works well for the start of the school year (the first few skill pages can be done without an instrument if they don't have one yet).
  4. Videos and photos support the written instructions. All videos can be viewed by scanning the QR codes, typing the URL, or clicking the link if viewing the digital file.
  5. Perfect for when you get a new student in the middle of the year and you need to teach them the basics and catch up.
  6. The pedagogy used for each instrument book has come from a variety of performing artists and educators from around the world.
  7. Tracking mastery of each skill is built in to the book. In these 'Missions,' students teach an adult family member the skill they have practiced and learned. The adults can sign and also provide quick comments to stay involved in the students music education.
  8. A few select books have been translated to Spanish and French! The YouTube videos are in English, but have auto-generated captions for the other languages. A nice added benefit to help ELLs and families who have English as a second language.
  9. Clear and consistent formatting across all books so you can track what skills students are learning.
  10. A teachers edition is included to help for quick references, curriculum planning, and teaching reminders.
